Specific characteristics of the bonds of molecules that make up gases determine whether the substance will be a greenhouse gas. The ability of a gas to absorb thermal IR depends on the bond energy and polarity of the molecules that make it up.
Molecules
Some infrared energy emitted by the earth is not absorbed by greenhouse gases and leaves our atmosphere. The delicate balance between absorbed and unabsorbed energy helps regulate Earth's climate.
